South Africa is ranked amongst the top producers of mining extractives worldwide. According to Curtis (2009), South Africa "is the world’s largest producer of platinum group metals, chrome ore, manganese and vanadium and a major supplier of gold (world rank 2) coal (5), iron ore (9), nickel (5) and uranium (5)." However, over the years the mining industries’ contribution towards GDP has enormously decreased and this is partly attributed to the depletion of the mineral reserves.
